Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty, more commonly referred to as eyelid surgery, is popular in San Diego, where year-round sun exposure can take a toll on the thin, delicate skin around the eyes. This is often one of the first areas to show age – from crepey texture to fatty deposits and bags. Dr. Victor Chung performs eyelid surgery for people from La Jolla, Encinitas, and beyond who wish to refine and improve their upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. He is board certified in otolaryngology – head and neck surgery and fellowship trained in facial plastic surgery, making him an exceptional choice for this intricate procedure.

To begin planning the details of your eyelid surgery, request a consultation at La Jolla Facial Plastic Surgery or call our office at (858) 461-0383 and a member of our staff will schedule your appointment.

Elements to Consider

Eyelid surgery is a highly customizable procedure, making it appropriate for a wide array of patients. It can be performed on the upper lids, lower lids, or both, and can treat many common aesthetic concerns related to this area of the face, including:

  • Fatty deposits causing bags or puffiness
  • Dark circles, caused by hollow areas below the eyes
  • Droopiness and laxity that may be severe enough to obscure vision
  • Fine lines, creases, and wrinkles around the eyes

During your consultation with Dr. Chung, you'll discuss your medical history as well as your lifestyle and aesthetic goals. Dr. Chung takes photographs of your face to help him further plan your surgery, and continues to take photographs throughout your entire surgical process. Also during your consultation, he takes careful measurements and photographs and performs a a thorough physical examination to determine the source of your primary complaints. In some cases, you may opt to undergo eyelid surgery at the same time as a brow lift or even a facelift.

Your Blepharoplasty

Eyelid surgery is an outpatient procedure, and Dr. Chung typically performs the surgery while you are under local anesthesia with sedation. Whether your surgery is focused on your upper or lower lids, Dr. Chung makes incisions that follow the natural creases of your lids. These incisions generate very discreet scars.

Once he's made these incisions, Dr. Chung removes and repositions tissue according to your desired outcome. Fat transfer or brow lift may supplement blepharoplasty for an improved result. He'll give you a much more specific idea of the details of your surgery as you plan your procedure. Before closing your incisions, he takes careful measurements of your eyelids and evaluates them for symmetry.

Recuperating at Home

After blepharoplasty, it's imperative to give your body the time it needs to heal. Although some discomfort is normal, it's easily controllable with prescribed medication. Dr. Chung removes your sutures after about a week, at which point most patients feel comfortable returning to work and other social activities.

Long-Term Results

Blepharoplasty is the best option available for men and women in search of lasting improvement of their eyelids. By following Dr. Chung's instructions after surgery and practicing good sun protection habits, you can enjoy your results for many years. Dr. Chung offers you a more specific prediction for the longevity of your results during your consultation.
