Elements to Consider

Facelift surgery is a complex procedure that Dr. Chung customizes based on your specific needs. During your consultation, Dr. Chung begins by taking photographs of your face. In fact, he typically takes a few photos during each of your appointments to monitor your progress and help him develop his surgical plan.

Also during your consultation, you'll discuss your lifestyle, medical history, and aesthetic goals – both short- and long-term. Keep in mind that facelift surgery is typically indicated for the lower two-thirds of the face. This means that it's best suited for treating concerns specific to this area, including:

  • Jowls
  • Sagging and laxity along the jawline
  • Double chin
  • Flattened cheeks
  • Lines and wrinkles around the nose and mouth
  • Unwanted or displaced fat deposits

Feel free to bring a trusted friend or family member to your consultation. As there's a lot to discuss at this initial appointment, it can help to have an additional person present to remember details that you may miss.

Your Facelift

Dr. Chung performs facelift surgery while you are under general anesthesia. He begins by making small incisions around your ears and potentially behind your hairline. The exact position of these incisions depends on your aesthetic goals and the significance of your surgery. Dr. Chung discusses his surgical plan with you well in advance of your facelift so you know precisely what to expect.

Once he's made the incisions, Dr. Chung removes and repositions tissue according to the surgical plan you develop together. Depending on the specifics of your surgery, your facelift may include fat grafting to add volume to depleted areas of your face. Toward the end of surgery, he takes extensive measurements to evaluate your face for symmetry before closing your incisions.

Recuperating at Home

Facelift is an outpatient procedure, but you'll need a loved one to drive you home and stay with you for the remainder of the day. Because the head is such a vascular area of the body, it's normal to experience a moderate amount of bruising and swelling. Discomfort is manageable with prescribed medication, and keeping your head elevated – even overnight – can further help reduce swelling.

You can expect to return to work after about 2 weeks, although you may need a bit more time off if your facelift was extensive or if your job is physically demanding. During your follow-up appointments, Dr. Chung evaluates your progress and gives you a more specific timeline for returning to other everyday activities.

Long-Term Results

Practicing good sun protection habits and avoiding significant weight fluctuations can go a long way toward preserving your results for many years. While facelift can take several years off your appearance, it's important to remember that it does not freeze the aging process. Over time, the clock will continue to turn and you'll gradually notice the delayed manifestation of natural wrinkles and folds.
